Google posts OTA and factory images for Android 8.1 Oreo developer preview

One of the joys of owning a Nexus or Pixel device is being able to update to the latest version of Android, and a bonus is that Google even provides preview builds of upcoming Android versions. Google formally announced Android 8.1 Oreo yesterday and launched a developer preview for a bunch of devices. 

If you are already running on the beta program, Google will send out an OTA update in the near future. If you just can’t wait, you can also download the OTA files to sideload to the following devices:

Google said it envisages that Android 8.1 Oreo will be really for public release sometime in December. As with all updates, especially manually flashed ones, it’s advisable to back up your data. Flashing the OTA files shouldn’t wipe your device, but sometimes things go wrong so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Notable features of the Android 8.1 Developer Preview includes improved targeting for low-RAM devices, notification tweaks that limits an apps ability to make an alert sound to once-per-second. Autofill framework updates. EditText updates, Video thumbnail extractor, fingerprint updates, new API’s for shared memory and wallpaper Colors.
